About

richie cooling

Based in the coastal city of Naarm/Melbourne, Australia, my work explores human and non-human connections to water and land. I work with recycled textiles, found materials, printmaking and digital design to investigate the ways in which we navigate the natural world. My work turns functional objects meant for navigating sea and land into dysfunctional objects intended to reframe our relationship to place. I am interested in the parallel qualities of natural materials and their unlikely man-made counterparts. Kelp and neoprene, fish skin and tent fabric, seal skin and vinyl, become analogous in my work. With these materials as a starting place, I follow lineages of craft practice, queer ecology, and outdoor recreation to produce weird and wacky sculptures and prints, reflecting the bizarreness of nature itself.
